White city of Arequipa
Arequipa, or “The White City”, capital of the department, due to the predominance of ashlar stone in its constructions, offers the tourist great samples of its varied architecture, such as temples, convents, monasteries and the famous Santa Catalina Convent that dates back to 1580, as well as a great number of stately homes.
Its countryside is of great beauty, as are the surrounding villages such as Cayma, Carmen Alto, Yanahuara and Characato, where there is an observatory. It has as its background the imposing and beautiful volcanic cone of the Misti.
In addition, we can find beautiful spas like Mejia, Mollendo and Camana, and medicinal hot springs like Yura, Socosani and Jesus.
